M-LEAGUE HISTORY
2008 M-LEAGUE SEASON
PREMIER MIXED
EASTERN Power has won a seesawing battle for the M-League Premier Mixed Championship.
Highly-fancied after finishing the regular season in second place, the Power took out the final against third-placed Melbourne Blizzard 45-38 on Sunday, March 2.
With both teams boasting a host of Victorian and Australian representatives the match promised to be a tight contest.
They did not disappoint - the Blizzard grabbing a one-point buffer to lead 12-11 at quarter time.
But the Blizzard attack end went missing in the second quarter, with goal shooter Preben Kohler and goal attack Alice Stephens squandering a series of easy shots, while Power goal attack Adam Boldiston started to gain control.
The Power went into the long break with what looked a decisive 26-17 lead.
But a Blizzard reshuffle which saw Gerard Murphy move from centre to defence wrested the ascendency back in the third.
Stephens found her range while Kohler ravaged the Power defence, posting 11 goals for the quarter to win it 15-8 and snap the deficit back to two.
A controversial umpiring decision against Stephens cost the Blizzard the chance to get within one early in the last and after that the Power were never headed.
An almost faultless shooting display from Power goal shooter Sharon Michaelson and Boldiston’s best-on-court performance wrapped up the quarter 11-6 and the match 45-38.
The M-League Men’s Premier and Division 1 grand finals will be played at Banyule Nets Stadium on Sunday, April 2, at 6pm.
